Last Wednesday was the first big summer event at Britt Oval, with over 150 people in attendance. We made kites and wacky hats, flew weather balloons, and celebrated the special space with our friends from the Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland, Saint Luke's Foundation, Cleveland Neighborhood Progress, and Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative. Everyone came together and brought something exciting and different to share at this celebration. What kind of celebration would be complete without snacks to share? The Cleveland Police Department and Fourth District Police broke out the grill and served up hot dogs and popsicles, all while meeting new people and creating new connections within the community. While two talented face paint artists turned kids into superheroes and butterflies, giant puppets danced to the steel drum band. Some young dancers even joined in! I think it's safe to say that Britt Oval has officially "woken up" for the summer. This amazing space is yours to enjoy, so make the most of it! Also, if you think this sounds like fun, you do NOT want to miss Splash at Britt Oval on August 8th. We can't wait to see you there!
Photo Credits: Derrick Connor These last two weeks have been busy for our Cleveland Parks. Fairview Park's ice cream socials have been a hit with tie-dye and chalk art. If you haven't been able to make it to Fairview Park yet this summer, you haven't missed out on all the fun! Due to the upcoming holiday we don't have anything planned for this week, but next Thursday we will be making sun prints with Julia Van Wagenen. Last Thursday chalk artist Hector Castellanos led a sidewalk chalk workshop for the fourth year in a row. Artists young and old learned different chalking techniques to create vibrant drawings that covered the floor of the pavilion.. If you're lucky, you still might be able to see some of the art if you visit the park this week.
Join us this Wednesday for the first of two fun-filled events on the beautiful Britt Oval. Bring a friend or come out to make new ones. We can't wait to see you there!
This Wednesday afternoon, neighborhood artists congregated at the Herman Park pavilion to try their hands at sculpting. Led by sculptor and mosaic artist George Woideck, the artists used clay, shells, and sticks to form 3D masterpieces that ranged from a plate of spaghetti to a miniature sculpture of LeBron James himself.
See the rest of the day's pictures on our photo album Cleveland4Art In Action! Did you miss out on the action this week? Don't worry! We will be making art at Herman Park all summer long, so mark your calendars and be sure to join us next time! Our friends from Upcycle Parts Shop arrived at Fairview Park carrying yards of old vinyl banners that had served their purposes and were ready for new life. By the end of the evening, a team of artists transformed the reused material into a burst of vibrant flowers, covering a portion of the chain link fence around Kentucky Gardens. Several artists were even spotted sporting vinyl bow ties, hair bows, and brooches! While we were busy crafting, volunteers from the Near West Family Network dipped out over 100 scoops Mitchell's ice cream. The line was long, but the chocolate peanut butter cup ice cream was well worth the wait! Don't forget to come out next week for tie-dye with our friends from Art House. Shirts will be provided, but feel free to bring something of your own to dye as well!
Yesterday, dozens of artists joined us at Herman Park for the first of many art-in-the-park Wednesdays. Led by the talented Kristen Cliffel from The Center for Arts Inspired Learning, the artists decorated and bedazzled a garden of glimmering, shimmering flower sculptures.
When Kristen asked the group to define the word "sculpture," one young artist responded without missing a beat, "a sculpture is a MASTERPIECE!" I couldn't have said it better myself. For more pictures of the artists in action, take a look at our photo album! Are you ready for not one, but TWO great events this week? Both Herman and Fairview Park are celebrating their first day of summer 2015 programing, and YOU'RE INVITED! This Wednesday, June 10, come on over to Herman Park from 1:00-2:00 PM for a special Art-in-the-Park craft provided by the Center for Art Inspired Learning. We're not expecting rain, but we'll have a blast and stay dry underneath the picnic shelter even if it starts to drizzle! On Thursday, June 11, bring the whole family to Fairview Park for the ice cream social summer kickoff. This week, Upcycle Parts Shop will lead us in creating more vinyl flowers to decorate the already-fabulous fence along Kentucky Gardens. We can't wait to see you there! One last thing to keep on your radar: next week Art House is bringing tie-dye to Fairview Park! They will be providing shirts, but feel free to get creative and bust out your old white (or not-so-white-anymore) clothing to spruce up hippie-style.
