In Lake Pool and Fairview parks, our young artists are getting to be old pros. Just ask visiting sculptor Kristen Cliffel and multimedia artist Wendy Mahon, who brought ribbons and collage scraps for fanciful fluttering butterflies, and gemstones to decorate picture frames extraordinaire. In just minutes, the crew was hard at work . . . and could barely be convinced when the time came to pack up. Of course, a silly opportunity to say "cheese" never hurts . . . We're always so sad when it's time for these guys to fly away. Luckily, it's not for long; we know they'll be back soon!

We know that we have some talented young kids here in the neighborhood, but sometimes, even we're surprised by what comes from simply turning people loose with the tools of creativity. Our friends at the Progressive Arts Alliance helped us by creating a scavenger hunt for kids to follow. The galleries below are what they came up with. Each slideshow belongs to one pair of teammates . . . was it you? Tell us about it by commenting below! This week is just jam-packed with events of all kinds: Wednesday in Herman Park, we'll be joined from 1-3 pm by the Progressive Arts Alliance for a kids' digital media workshop -- all equipment is provided, so just bring yourself and your sharp eye! Wednesday night, we'll be kicking off our summer programming at Michael Zone Recreation Center, where we'll be joined once again by Nicole McGee from Upcycle Parts Shop, who will lead a craft from 5:30-7:30 pm; and for all you fitness buffs, you can enjoy free Zumba starting at 6:30! Thursday afternoon from 1-2 pm we'll join ceramicist George Woideck in Lake Pool Park to dig into come clay. Thursday at Fairview Park, MOCA Cleveland will host an interactive art experience for young people Inspired by Hans Op de Beeck’s Staging Silence 2 Exhibition. We'll invite community members to build miniature outdoor stages and shoot short videos based on the techniques of stop-motion animation. Videos will be posted to MOCA’s social media pages. Friday night, get ready for an extra special event, the grand opening of Upcycle Parts Shop on Saint Clair -- stay tuned for more details. Saturday, it's back to Fairview Park with the Progressive Arts Alliance from 1-3 pm. And don't forget to check out Kaboom-Churchill Park for Motown Music, good food and plenty of fun . . . that's from 1-4 pm. Phew. We suggest that on Sunday, everybody takes a rest! See the calendar for dates and details. This afternoon, crafters in Herman Park warded off heavy clouds and bad juju this afternoon with an assortment of bright and colorful paper masks, helping us stay dry and look good while doing it! Artist Wendy Mahon, originally from Trinidad, has worked in the field of festival arts for years. As a visiting artist and long-time participant in the Cleveland Museum of Art's Parade the Circle, she has helped create the workshops that bring the colorful event to life. Today's workshop was geared at a younger set of merry-makers -- scroll through the gallery below to see what they've created, and visit our calendar to see when you can next catch Wendy at a CleveLAND4Art event: we'll be seeing plenty more of her this summer! Be-masked spirits get ready to ride off and take flight!
Join us in Herman Park from 1-2 pm today for mask-making with Wendy Mahon!
Wed25 This afternoon in Herman Park with George Woideck, we found that clay was natural way for everyone to express their creativity, and lend a helping hand! Our participants were eager to show each other what they learned, and listened carefully to their peers as they tried new techniques. We even had two friendly neighborhood chickens venture across the pavement to get in on the fun, giving us an answer to that age-old question: to make art, of course! Get ready for dinos and helicopters, my oh my!This week in Herman Park, we'll be with tile and ceramic artist and mosaic master George Woideck making clay dinosaurs and helicopters that really fly! Check out George's work at www.tileandclayart.com. Please join us Wednesday from 1-2 pm, and visit us back here later to see photos of what we made!
Looks like the weather's holding out for our first #CleveLAND4Art summer Art in the Park event! We're in Detroit Shoreway at Herman Park from 1-2 pm. It's not even 1 o'clock yet, and we already have our first customers! Artist Mark Yasenchack is getting his hands dirty showing the kids collage and monoprints -- the fancy world for those Rorschach-like paintings that transform before your eyes as you fold and unfold them . . . what do you see?
Tomorrow we'll have our summer kickoff at Fairview Park from 7-9 ... come check us out for paper flowers with Brigitte Fiorelle, Dr.U.R Awesome, and Mitchells Ice Cream! |
