The Community Resource Fair hosted last week by Fairhill Partners was a huge success, bringing together community members and the organizations aimed at offering support. In addition to some great resources, the fair offered giant chess games (see above!) prize giveaways, and fun for all ages. Take a look below to see some of the great shots we took, or check out our photo album for more pictures!

Arts & Crafts Schedule 11-1PM | Children's make-and-take craft activity Noon-3PM | Face painters 2-4PM | Sidewalk chalking with Hector Castellanos August 15, 2015 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. East End Neighborhood House 2749 Woodhill Rd. Cleveland, OH 44104 In honor of the MakingOurOwnSpace (MOOS) workshop's hard work this summer, we filled up Britt Oval with music, art, neighbors, and LOTS of fun this past Saturday for a one-of-a-kind celebration. MOOS has been working for months to create accessible outdoor furniture that will enhance the site, which is right across the street from Saint Luke's Foundation, and respond to the community's needs. The brightly-colored picnic tables, platforms, and bird houses have transformed what used to be a bare grassy lawn into a vibrant and dynamic space. We got to see some of their work in action on Saturday, as the team members gathered around to construct a raised platforms amid the bubbles and music. Joining us in celebration was Dee Jay Doc and the Fresh Camp, armed with original hip hop lyrics and a whole lot of spirit. Their message of Cleveland pride and community-building could not have been a better fit for the day's celebration! Amid all the action, a few MOOS workshop participants take the time to sit back and enjoy their creation. The dunk tank was a hit, especially when celebrities like Captain Sulzer volunteered as tribute. Sometimes the tennis balls didn't pack quite enough punch, and the kids had to resort to other methods of soaking their police force. Fortunately the Captain didn't hold it against them! This day could not have been possible without the ongoing support from and dedication of our partners. Many thanks to the following superstars: Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland Cleveland Neighborhood Progress Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative Saint Luke's Foundation Cleveland Police Foundation Fourth District Police Department We took SO many photos of Splash on Britt Oval, so be sure to check the rest of them out in our album!
Tonight was the last of the 2015 Summer Ice Cream Socials at Fairview Park, and boy did we go out with a bang! We were treated to ice cream graciously provided by Mason's Creamery, and our friends from Upcycle Parts Shop came back with an old favorite craft: recycled vinyl flowers! In addition to the crafts and ice cream, cellist Carlyn Kessler and violist Kimia Ghaderi's lovely string duet added the final touch to the evening. We tied flowers to the Kentucky Garden fence as the sun went down, all the while listening to the sweet tune of Bach and Gershwin. It couldn't have been a more delightful evening! Carlyn and Kimia were especially a hit with our younger crowd... ... and there were plenty of helpers to make flowers for the fence. The fence has come a long way since last year, but there's still plenty of empty space for the years to come!
Looking for more pictures of this evening? Find them in our photo album. Did you know that you can use math to create beautiful art? That's just what the kids at Herman Park did today! With a little guidance from artist and dancer Tom Evert, they learned how to use a compass to draw intersecting circles in a pattern that could radiate outward infinitely (though most of us didn't get that far). These "Seed of Life" drawings start with a single point and grow outward from it by the careful placement of perfect circles. Wielding the compass was tricky at first, but the young artists quickly caught on. After mastering the compass came the fun task of coloring the design. Although we all used the same initial pattern of radiating circles as a starting point, no two drawings turned out anything alike. Artists got wild with their design, sometimes even coloring outside the lines! Everything was fair game, and we ended up with quite an array of beautiful pieces of art. I had just finished cleaning up and was on the way to my car when I noticed the far fence of the basketball court. Upon further inspection, this is what I found: What better place to display art than here? We took a LOT of pictures today, so be sure to check them out in our photo album! That's it for our regular Wednesday Art-in-the-Park at Herman, but we know summer's not quite over yet! Join us on the evening August 21 at for an outdoor movie and a craft! Craft starts at 7:00pm, and the movie will start at 8:30pm.
See you there! Last night at Herman Park was the premier of Lost in The Water, STEP's original youth-written play. The energy and grace with which these actors performed made it hard to believe that most of the STEP participants have had little or no previous experience in the performing arts.
If you weren't able to make it last night, be sure to mark your calendars for one of the upcoming performances in a neighborhood park near you. This event is truly NOT to be missed. |
