. . . because these kids draw a mean mural!Local artist Hector Castellanos worked with young artists at Zone Rec to bring the art of sidewalk chalking to new heights: sure, they stayed on the ground, but with special artists' chalk pastels, plus instruction on fading, color blending and creating boarders, these vibrant designs were really beyond the pale! . . . what they're saying:"We love art!" say siblings Marcus (left), Imer and Celeste.
"I make crafts all day if I can," Imer adds, "until my mom stops me!" Sweetly soft-spoken, Imer (a self-described "crafting fool,") has a way with words that's hard to place: it could be childlike sincerity or the tongue-in-cheekiness of a person many times his age. But one things that's definitely beyond his years is his ability to cooperate and work with others. Same goes for his brother and sister, all of whom paired up to make this weeks' spectacular visions in chalk. These kids are die hard fans of Zone Rec and its ample artistic outlets, so stay tuned for more fabulous creations from the three who plan to come back every week. Given the chance to do anything on site, what would they pick? "Plant flowers!" was the cry from Imer and Celeste in unison. "Cover that whole field in flowers," Imer edited, pointing in all earnestness. "The whole thing."

Which way to the party, you ask? Well, it's all around you! with everyone from Spiderman the Minnie Mouse, to friends and neighbors cooking out and grillin' up, we had a great time on Saturday with our friends from Famicos Foundation at Kaboom-Churchill Park on Saturday!
Read more about the Famicos Foundation and their great work for neighborhoods and houses at: http://www.famicos.org/ We know that we have some talented young kids here in the neighborhood, but sometimes, even we're surprised by what comes from simply turning people loose with the tools of creativity. Our friends at the Progressive Arts Alliance helped us by creating a scavenger hunt for kids to follow. The galleries below are what they came up with. Each slideshow belongs to one pair of teammates . . . was it you? Tell us about it by commenting below! We made our collective directorial debut at Fairview Park this Thursday, with a little help from our friends at MOCA, the Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art. Here, Nicole is is helping young cinephiles construct sets to be used as the background (and foreground, and middle ground, as we learned . . .) for short stop-motion animation films. Then, we got down and photographed in a high-tech booth that made playing filmmaker perfectly portable - even in the park! Missed all the action and excitement? Don't worry, we'll TAKE TWO this week! Join us for more stop motion goodness at Herman Park this Wednesday from 1-3 pm where we'll be mixing it up with some help from the folks at the Progressive Arts Alliance. They'll be back at Fairview this Saturday from 1-3 pm. Plus, we'll catch MOCA again later in August, when they'll bring the project back to accompany our Arts in August series on August 1st and August 7 . . . . so I guess that's really TAKE TWO, TAKE THREE, TAKE FOUR AND TAKE FIVE . . . at least we're getting plenty of practice! Find out where to join us by checking our calendar!
Stop Motion Animation: Weds/7-16, 1-3 pm, Herman Park Sat/7-19 1-3 pm Fairview Park Fri/8-1 7-9 pm Lincoln Park Fri/8-8 7:30-9:30 pm Lincoln Park FREE! . . . the better to craft with!Of course, when we say trash, we really mean treasure! What the heck are we talking about? Upcycling, of course! When you upcycle, you take some old and and turn into something new (and better!) . . . it's sort of like recycling but without the added benefit that what ever you started with -- an old bottle, a used carpet -- has the chance to live life not just as the same thing over and over again, but as something completely different and oftentimes way cooler than whatever it began as. Upcycling is all about creativity and finding the hidden value in everyday objects that are often discarded or taken for granted. Still not sure what we're talking about? Good! join us for a splash into the upcycling world with the grand opening of Upcycle Parts Shop, part of the Upcycle Saint Clair project, this Friday from 5:30 -7:30. Can't make it? No Problem! Upcycling and the Upcycle Parts Shop are here to stay! This week is just jam-packed with events of all kinds: Wednesday in Herman Park, we'll be joined from 1-3 pm by the Progressive Arts Alliance for a kids' digital media workshop -- all equipment is provided, so just bring yourself and your sharp eye! Wednesday night, we'll be kicking off our summer programming at Michael Zone Recreation Center, where we'll be joined once again by Nicole McGee from Upcycle Parts Shop, who will lead a craft from 5:30-7:30 pm; and for all you fitness buffs, you can enjoy free Zumba starting at 6:30! Thursday afternoon from 1-2 pm we'll join ceramicist George Woideck in Lake Pool Park to dig into come clay. Thursday at Fairview Park, MOCA Cleveland will host an interactive art experience for young people Inspired by Hans Op de Beeck’s Staging Silence 2 Exhibition. We'll invite community members to build miniature outdoor stages and shoot short videos based on the techniques of stop-motion animation. Videos will be posted to MOCA’s social media pages. Friday night, get ready for an extra special event, the grand opening of Upcycle Parts Shop on Saint Clair -- stay tuned for more details. Saturday, it's back to Fairview Park with the Progressive Arts Alliance from 1-3 pm. And don't forget to check out Kaboom-Churchill Park for Motown Music, good food and plenty of fun . . . that's from 1-4 pm. Phew. We suggest that on Sunday, everybody takes a rest!
