This afternoon at Herman Park we gathered under the pavilion to make mosaics with glass tiles. We were so thrilled to have over forty people show up for the craft, led by artist George Woideck. Take a look below to see some of the creations our young artists made.
Join us for another night of live Jazz, children's activities, and fun at the Mt. Pleasant Community Jammin at the Point Summer Outdoor Concert. Thursday, July 16, 2015 6:00 - 8:00 PM Intersection of 140th and Union This week we are excited to introduce the Neighborhood Health Fair, featuring The David Crawford Project. We hope to see you there! Yesterday, our friends from Upcycle Parts Shop brought an entire carload of wonderful recycled materials for an evening of creativity and fun at Michael Zone Rec Center. We made crowns, batons, picture frames, and more. Take a look at some of the artists with their creations below, and think about how you could reuse some of the "junk" in your life. Also: LAND studio's new "I <3 Art" stickers are in, and they are everything we hoped they would be. This artist even found a way to integrate them into her project! If you came to the blog because you found the website on the sticker, let us know in the comments! Take a look at some of the beautiful images our fantastic photographer captured last Saturday at the Larchmere Festival.
Not even the threat of looming storm clouds could keep Ohio City neighbors from heading over to Fairview Park for last week's ice cream social. While volunteers passed out ice cream sandwiches, artist Julia Van Wagenen held a loom-making workshop at a nearby picnic table. Finished weavings were made into wall hangings, necklaces, bracelets, hand warmers, and crowns! Check out the pictures below to see some of the young artists at work Make sure you mark your calendars for next week's ice cream social. Instead of our usual craft, you will be treated to a concert with trombonist Sam Blakeslee's quartet. Bring your lawn chair and the whole family and enjoy a break from the thunder storms. Check out Sam's music here.
Wednesdays are quickly becoming my favorite day of the week, and I don't think it's hard to see why: while my colleagues at the office are writing emails and planning meetings, I get to pack up my car and drive a few blocks over to Herman Park, where summer is in full swing. The kids at Herman know how to enjoy their vacation! Whether they are shooting hoops, riding bikes, or climbing on the playground, everyone always seems to be having a blast. And they never fail to come out for art-in-the-park Wednesdays! This week was no different: as soon as artist Augusto began to set up his paints under the pavilion, the kids began to wander over. It was hard to wait, but some of the youngsters offered to help put up signage and hand out surveys to pass the time. Finally, one o'clock rolled around and it was time to paint! After listening to a few minutes of instruction from Augusto, everyone got right down to business creating masterpieces. Take a look at what they made: One creative artist even had the help of her little friend to create dozens of white polka-dots! If you love art as much as these kids do, come out and join us next week at Herman Park from 1:00-2:00 PM. Who knows, maybe Wednesday will become your favorite day of the week, too!
Don't miss the annual Larchmere Street Festival, this Saturday only from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Come rain or shine to enjoy the food, music, performances, and more!
Last night was the kickoff for our July "Zumbacraft" Series at Michael Zone Recreation Center. The splash park was packed, but as soon as professional chalk artist Hector Castellanos started setting up camp, the kids came trickling over. After some instruction from Hector, the kids (and a few adults) let their creativity flow. Hearts and flowers were all the rage, but we saw everything from sunsets to Spongebob. Some artists even threw realism to the wayside and followed in the footsteps of Kandinsky and Pollock! After an hour of quiet and contemplative drawing, the Zumba class joined us and cranked up the energy level with their mix of hip hop and reggaeton. It was hard to keep from dancing, but some artists managed to stay focused! Not all the chalk stayed on the ground: by the end of the night, our artists were walking masterpieces themselves. Check out the rest of our photos to see the artists at work, as well as the aftermath of an epic chalk-fight! If this looks like fun, make sure you join us every Monday in July from 5:30-7:30 for another awesome evening of art and music!
Back by popular demand, Hector Castellanos is bringing his sidewalk chalk and teaching skills to Michael Zone Recreation Center TONIGHT during the adult Zumba class. Join us at the pavilion from 5:30-7:30 PM for some colorful fun, and prepare to get your hands dirty!
This is just the first in our July Zumbacraft series, so check back every Monday this month to learn about what's coming up next. For more dates, see our calendar of events. |
