Today we kicked off our summer park programs in Detroit Shoreway with a fun afternoon of clay art led by artist George Woideck. Kids and teens learned about how to use clay, where it comes from, and different kinds of tools they can use to manipulate their sculptures. George helped them create plates with seashell imprints, mold some of their favorite foods, and make whatever else came to the imagination. Check out a few pictures of the event: If you missed the fun today, don't worry! There are plenty of opportunities to get involved with our free summer art events in the Detroit Shoreway area. You can find a full schedule below, or check our calendar to see all the events we have coming up. A big thank you to our partners and sponsors, like the Center for Arts Inspired Learning, Councilman Matt Zone, and Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization for helping make this all possible. Hope to see you there next week!

Part of caring for your neighborhood is doing your part to make sure the streets and sidewalks remain as clean as possible. While we should all be throwing away our trash and disposing of recyclables, sometimes litter still finds its way onto the ground. Kim Fields with Woodland Hills Community Organization has organized weekend clean up efforts during the summer so we can gather as a group to help keep Woodland Hills clean, and to spend time outside while doing so. Groups have already been to work gathering trash and yard waste, check it out: There are a lot of opportunities throughout the summer to help with the clean up events, each week tackling the trash on a different street of the neighborhood. You can view the schedule below, as well as check for upcoming events on our calendar. Do your part to help our neighborhoods shine!
The idea behind the walks draws inspiration from Jane's Walk, which are walking tours led by members of a community to explore and learn more about their neighborhood, and get a little exercise in the process. Alexandra Horowitz' book On Looking, A Walker's Guide to the Art of Observation also influenced these events, in that experts from the area help us see the neighborhood through their eyes and in a new context. The next Walk with Experts will focus on the subject of Public Safety, and will begin at the Fourth District Police Station. Check out the event poster below: These walks will be happening over the next few months, with different focuses and experts each time. Here is a short list of upcoming walks for you to pencil into your schedule:
