"Cleveland Public Theatre’s celebrated Student Theatre Enrichment Program (STEP) is Cleveland’s longest-running arts and job training program for urban teens. STEP returns to Cleveland city parks this summer, celebrating its 23rd year with an original new play, And Yet, We Shine. Created and performed by the 2017 STEP cast and tech ensemble, And Yet, We Shine unfolds in a nation where artistic expression is illegal. To galvanize resistance and combat this oppression of creativity, artists gather in secret to tell each other stories. Three tales are woven together: one follows three young people as they struggle to choose their place (and identity) within a totalitarian society; another, inspired by Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, grapples with individual resistance to mass conformity; and in the final story, two brothers awaken to systems of injustice and inequity while traveling across the country to connect with their absent father. Featuring original song, storytelling and dance, And Yet, We Shine highlights Cleveland youth as they share their hearts, speak truth to power and grow in community. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy free theatre in the park!" -Cleveland Public Theatre Join us for the opening performance on Tuesday 8/1 at Herman Park! Come to Herman Park, located one block north of Detroit, between W. 59th and W. 61st Streets. Start setting up your blankets and chairs around 6:00pm, and the show will start promptly at 7:00pm! And don't worry if you can't make it to opening night, STEP's And Yet, We Shine will be touring around the city during the first two weeks of August. Check out the schedule below to see when they'll be performing near you!
The rain eased up just in time for a spectacular hour of bubbles provided by Dr. U.R. Awesome and bomb pops handed out by Near West Family Network. Bubbles were popped with sheer delight, and Dr. Awesome lived up to his name with gigantic, iridescent blobs that wowed children and parents alike. Another successful ice cream social wrapped up with soapy faces and sticky hands. Check out the photos below of the joyous evening: Thanks to our partners Near West Family Network and Councilman Kerry McCormack for helping make this possible, and we hope to see you at the next ice cream social!
Augusto Bordelois from The Center of Arts Inspired Learning joined us at Herman Park Wednesday afternoon, and led an activity where all you needed was paper, markers, and a hand to trace. Together, we traced hands in overlapping patterns and the kids each took unique approaches to the design portion of the activity. Afterwards, we continued to draw and color whatever came to the imagination. Costumes weren't required, but definitely encouraged. Be sure to join us for more afternoon art activities at Fairview Park, as well as our other programs at Michael Zone and the Lorain Branch of the Cleveland Public Library. Thank you to our partners for helping bring creative fun to our endlessly enthusiastic young artists.
Chalk art with Hector Castellanos was a hit at Fairview Park on Thursday June 22nd. Hector led a quick lesson about blending tools and how to remove the taped borders to reveal sharp edges. With popsicles in hand, the young artists got to work. There was an enormous amount of talent and enthusiasm under the pavilion as the children experimented with shape, color and some freehand drawing. Check out their artwork below: Thank you to Hector Castellanos, Near West Family Network, Councilman Kerry McCormack and everyone who joined in on the fun! Join us this week on 6/29 for more treats and an activity led by Talespinner Children's Theater.
Last Thursday, Fairview Park on West 38th Street was bustling with people enjoying the splash area, playground and beautiful weather. It was the perfect kind of day to kick off our weekly summer ice cream socials at the park. Upcycle Parts Shop set up their crafting table and invited children and adults alike to create flowers out of recycled vinyl to attach along the fence of neighboring Kentucky Garden. Volunteers from Near West Family Network started scooping Mitchell's ice cream and sorbet for a long line of community members. Here are a few pictures of the wonderful evening at Fairview Park: The fun continues!
Today, Thursday 6/22, artist Hector Castellanos will be at Fairview Park to lead a chalk activity and we will be there handing out free ice cream treats. Below is the full schedule for the Ice Cream Socials, and we hope to see you there! |
